Jewel crafting and Black smithing

Blacksmithing
 or Jewelcrafting
Jewelcrafting is notably easier than Blacksmithing to level and manage.
It costs much less to level and once it’s level all you do is load up my gem calculator, buy, combine and sell gems and you’ll either make a profit along with all the other jewelcrafters or you will not.
Blacksmithing involves hundreds of possible crafts and infinite possible combinations.
A large amount of theory crafting and calculations have yet to be made regarding the chances of making gold off a certain investment.
It will be uncharted territory.
Jewelcrafting might attract droves of players, dropping the profit margin down ridiculously fast making it simply not worth it to combine or deal with gems.
Although, as I pointed out months ago a single radiant star gem maybe worth as much as a trillion gold. Pages of Jewelcrafting,
Tomes of Jewelcrafting and Tomes of Secrets are going to be needed in high quantities to level Jewelcrafting.
Tomes of Secrets will also be needed by blacksmiths and each type of page is required to combine some gems.
I think these will some of the most expensive materials and it could send the value of a radiant star up to many trillions instead of just one.
Leveling Jewelcrafting
So let’s say you do choose Jewelcrafting. You should level and use it fast
If you don’t go fast with it, it’s not worth spending your first few gold on it. You will need 130,000 gold, 10 Pages of Jewelcrafting (found in Nightmare),
20 Tomes of Jewelcrafting (found in Hell) and 40 Tomes of Secrets (found only in Inferno) to reach Exalted which will ultimately allow you to combine into radiant stars.
A single Radiant Star requires 21,000 gold and 6 Tomes of Secrets to create, along with 3 Perfect Stars, each which require 18,000 gold and 4 Tomes of Secrets to create.
It looks like our datamined Jeweler leveling costs and breakdown was correct as well since the exact numbers have been updated on Battle Net.
The Jeweler also has recipes to combine the last 3 levels of gems, which requires rank 10 or in other words, a max level Jeweler.
The new gem combine costs that we datamined has now been updated on the official site as well. It looks like the costs are only 50 gold for each level of gem
Assuming this cost goes live, it will no longer take 42 million gold to create a single rank 14 gem.
The new prices to combine the 19683 rank 5 gems into one rank 14 gem is 492,050 gold,
A much more reasonable number, however the pages and tomes required were increased significantly to 3645 Tome of Jewelcrafting,

6561 Page of Jewelcrafting, and 550 Tome of Secrets.

Going from a rank 4 to rank 5 gem now costs a page of jewelcrafting as well. END UPDATE
This adds up, exponentially, very fast.
Early in the beta it was stated that only tier 5 gems would drop, but this was redacted to tier 8 gems recently. So everything beyong level 8 will require combination by a jewelcrafter.

If you decide not to level an artisan, focus on gear initially. Your gold will quickly devalue but your gear might be a sound investment.
Get yourself to a point where you can test yourself in Inferno as quickly as possible.
Whether beating it is a realistic early-goal or not is yet to be determined, but certainly being able to farm the early stages will open up a lot of gold making opportunities to you.
If you want to combine gems from
the auction house and resell them
If you want to do this, pick the lowest gem level you want to start with and search for the number you want to buy. It’s good to buy in powers of 3, such as: 3, 9, 27, 81, 243, 729, 2,187, etc. For this example we’ll evaluate buying 81 chipped gems to turn into 1 perfect (L5) gem. Search for 81 Chipped Gems and enter the quantity 81 and price per item (on the auction house) into the calculator below.
It will show you how many of each of the next several tiers you can combine from these 81 chipped gems as well as how much you could sell them for to break even. This calculation includes the gold cost to combine each group of 3 gems (500 from chipped->flawed, 750 from flawed->Regular). You can compare that price to the one on the auction house to determine if it’s a good idea to buy the chipped gems, combine them and resell them. If you use the value of 1 gold per chipped gem you’ll see that a perfect gem still costs 26,761 gold to combine (including crafting costs)!! This calculator also takes into account the Pages of Jewelcrafting
Tomes of Jewelcrafting and
Tomes of Secrets that are needed at each tier to craft.
The Amethyst
is, just like in real life, a purple'ish tint.

It offers Vitality when inserted into regular gear.

When it's inserted into a helm it will increase your total health by a percentage.

The potency of any gem is based on the gem's quality, which we will discuss below.

The Emerald is a green rock,
inserted into helm and regular
equipment.
When in a helmet, it increases your
chance of finding a magical item by
a percentage.

When in other gear, it increases your
Dexterity.

The Ruby is the traditioinal red rock, offering
Strength when inserted into regular gear and
a percentage based boost to your experience
earned when inserted into your helmet.

The Topaz is the yellow gem offering either

Intellect (in your gear) but when inserted

into your helmet it offers an

increased
% gold found from monsters

killed in dungeons and other areas.

One recent change has gone mostly unnoticed.
That is, there are no more Page of Training
and Tome of Training showing up in Diablo 3.
If you’ve glossed over the Blacksmith and
Jewelcrafting leveling guides in the past you’ll
have seen that each profession required
over a hundred or so Tomes of Training,

each of which require 5 Pages of Training.
Together, hundreds of pages were needed and to be honest they didn’t drop all that often in the beta.
Each level of training also required a handful of crafting material.
More rare materials were needed as you progressed your blacksmith and eventually you had to fork out dozens of rare crafting materials.
So what’s new? In order to train your Blacksmith you will now need to spend 115,00 gold (nothing to laugh at) and 130 Pages of Blacksmithing
You no longer need any essences, animal parts or elemental crafting material to level your artisans, but you do need a lot more gold.
As for Jewelcrafting (or as Blizzard is calling it: Jewel Crafting) you no longer need the Tomes of Training but instead you need 30 Pages of Jewel Crafting

and 46,000 gold to reach exalted.

I want a Radiant Star but want to know
what the cheapest way to get one is.
This is the second way you can use this calculator. To calculate the cheapest way to get a radiant star enter the quantity 1 in radiant star and then the auction house price for that gem under the price / value column. It will spit out how many of each low quality gem you would need to buy and the most you should pay for each lower tier gem. You can scan your auction house and compare prices and find the one that has the largest savings margin.jewel crafting gem calculator
